‘Mrs Shufflewick’, Judy Garland, ‘Mr Humphries’ and gay life on the
ocean waves are due to be the highlights of LGBT History Month in
Portsmouth in February.
One of the busiest schedules of events
in the country is close to being confirmed and the month will also see
the local LGBT History Month group make its own little piece of history
when the Rainbow Flag will be flown outside the civic offices for the
first time ever. Portsmouth City Council agreed to change their policy
on which flags could be flown at a meeting held in January after the
History Month group had contacted the Leader of the City Council
requesting a change. Chair of the LGBT History Month group Steve
Ashfield said of the decision “This is great news for the LGBT
Community in Portsmouth. We strongly appreciate the support given to
us on this matter by the Leader of the City Council,
Cllr.Vernon-Jackson and hope this will also help other groups in the
area to have their flags flown.”
On February 3rd there’s a
church service at John Pounds Memorial Church, High Street, Old
Portsmouth. which will serve as a launch for LGBT History Month. This
starts at 6.30pm and refreshments will be available. On the 6th at
the Third Floor Arts Centre at the Portsmouth Central Library there’s
an appearance by Debbie Saloman. Debbie is the star and writer of the
one-woman show ‘Get Happy’ that looks at the life of Judy Garland while
in London rehearsing for a world tour that would climax in her
legendary concert at the Carnegie Hall. Tickets are available on the
night priced £3.50 (£2.50 concessions) and the event begins at 7pm.
